ATP Cleanliness Testing

Rapid, Objective Cleaning Verification

A surface may look clean while still containing organic residue. ATP cleanliness testing provides a fast and objective way to assess whether selected surfaces have been effectively cleaned.

ATP—adenosine triphosphate—is present in living cells and organic material. During testing, a defined area is swabbed and the sample is placed into a portable luminometer. The instrument measures the amount of ATP present and provides a result in Relative Light Units (RLU).

Lower readings generally indicate a cleaner surface, while elevated readings may show that additional cleaning or attention is required.

Results are interpreted using appropriate testing procedures and established thresholds for the area being assessed.

ATP cleanliness testing can help:

• Verify cleaning and decontamination work
• Identify surfaces requiring additional cleaning
• Assess high-touch and frequently used areas
• Support routine cleanliness-monitoring programs
• Provide immediate, documented results

ATP testing measures overall biological and organic residue. It does not identify specific bacteria, viruses, mold species or other pathogens and does not replace laboratory microbial testing when that testing is required.

WHERE ATP TESTING IS USEFUL

ATP testing can provide rapid cleanliness

verification in many settings, including:

• After professional cleaning or decontamination
• Following restoration or remediation cleanup
• Offices and strata common areas
• Healthcare and childcare facilities
• Food-preparation and commercial kitchen areas
• High-touch surfaces such as handles, switches and countertops
• Routine facility cleanliness-monitoring programs

Testing locations are selected based on the space, how it is used and the purpose of the assessment.

FAST RESULTS. CLEAR NEXT STEPS.

ATP testing provides on-site results within seconds, allowing the cleanliness of selected surfaces to be assessed immediately.

For each area tested, Balco Environmental can document:

• The location and surface sampled
• The ATP reading in Relative Light Units (RLU)
• The applicable cleanliness threshold, when established
• Whether additional cleaning is recommended
• Follow-up testing results, when required

If a reading is elevated, the affected surface can be cleaned again and retested to help confirm whether the cleaning process was effective.

Clear measurements provide property owners, facility managers and cleaning professionals with objective information—not just a visual impression that a surface appears clean.
